The Different RO Orchestra Course Types
The Rehearsal Orchestra runs a series of weekend orchestra courses in the UK, in London, during the winter and spring. Two-day courses are usually held in January and February followed by one-day courses on Sundays during March, April and May.
Then there is the residential orchestra course during the Edinburgh International Festival — a stimulating week of concentrated music making which has been held there every year since the orchestra's foundation in 1957.
There are occasional 'special' courses where guest conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle or Sir Andrew Davis have given a day rehearsal — as in our 50th Anniversary year when we welcomed Sir Charles MacKerras, Sir Andrew Davis, Mark Elder and Peter Donohoe as guest conductors.
Over the last years we have also had Wagner weekends in October, complete with soloists working on roles in preparation for appearances at major opera houses.
Prerequisites
You need to be at least Grade 8 standard, and you will frequently be working with pros or semi-pros at postgraduate standard. The pace of the rehearsals is demanding and we do not send out music in advance, so your sight-reading needs to be good! Players of all ages and from all walks of life (including professional players) use the Rehearsal Orchestra to improve their orchestral playing.
