The Rehearsal Orchestra In Edinburgh
The Rehearsal Orchestra’s annual Edinburgh summer residential course is a unique and exciting venture, combining concentrated rehearsals of a wide range of challenging symphonic repertoire during the day with the opportunity to explore Edinburgh and Festival and Fringe events during the evening. Rehearsals take place in the stunning surroundings of George Heriot’s School, overlooking Edinburgh Castle.
Accommodation is provided in self-catering apartments a few minutes’ walk from the rehearsal venue, the Usher Hall and other Festival and Fringe venues. Alternatively, players are welcome to arrange their own accommodation, if they prefer.
Comments from previous courses:
“Just the right mix of challenging new repertoire and plenty of time and opportunity to socialise with a great group of musicians.”
“Excellent course, fine organisation and the chance to meet some great people. A very valuable experience for students, plus the opportunity to study great works in depth without the pressure of public performance.”
"The conductors were fun and friendly. The location for rehearsals was stunning! The choice of repertoire was interesting and challenging (in a good way).”
“Loved it – great atmosphere, lovely group of people, great variety of repertoire.”
SCHEDULE
Players gather in Edinburgh late afternoon on Saturday 11th August and leave on Saturday 18th August. Rehearsals take place on the first Saturday evening, then morning and afternoon thereafter. The course finishes with an Open Rehearsal on the Friday afternoon and a get-together at the School that evening.
Players leave for home in the morning on Saturday 18th August. Players change seats by rotation from piece to piece, but are welcome to express a preference for parts in specific repertoire. Depending on orchestration, individual woodwind and brass may not play in every piece; a detailed seating plan is drawn up in advance with the aim of allocating parts as fairly as possible.
APPLICATIONS
Applications are invited from advanced players, Grade 8 plus and competent sightreaders. To apply, please visit the 'Apply for courses' page. The administrator will contact you shortly.
